Absinthe – A Search for Enlightenment
– Written and illustrated by Lesley VanHoose –

Once upon a time there was a man named John. He heard about the tales of a mystical drink from long ago, from a far away land.

John was intrigued. He traveled far and wide to an old city named New Orleans to visit the one and only Old Absinthe House. After John’s long journey he would be able to quench his thurst with the forbidden Absinthe. To his surprise his journey was in vain.

Alas, Absinthe was not available in his country. Returning home disappointed, John told his friends Manfred and Hilda traveling from abroad, his tale of woe. When Manfred and Hilda returned to their homeland, they were so touched by John’s journeys and search for enlightenment they decided to find this taboo drink and make his quest come true. Against all odds they found the drink and sent it across the ocean to John.

He was thrilled and had a party. He invited his family and friends to partake in an adventure they would never forget. This was a chance to broaden their minds and souls and unleash hidden talents spiritually and artistically.

The group drank the drinks in the same manner as done a century ago.

John and Hans played guitar and made beautiful music that even Erik Clapton would be jealous of.

However, with all the creativity that was in the air, things took a turn for the worse.

Everyone continued to drink.

John became mad, thus cutting off his ear!

John’s friend Joey turned on his good friend Jerry. He wacked him on the head inflecting a mortal wound.

Unfortunately the story of a man’s search for enlightenment has a disturbing and tragic ending.
